8 Amazing Homemade Hair Treatments

Ok I think we all know that your hair is deserving of the best care since it helps you look amazing and gorgeous and brings all the boys to the yard. I’m all about spending money on a great haircut, but when your hair needs a little boost, there’s no need to shell out a lot of cash when you can create the same affect at home. Here are 8 amazing homemade hair treatments you can save money on by making them in the comfort of your own kitchen to fix any type of hair problem:

All Hair Types: Eggs

Eggs are surprisingly amazing for your hair. The yolk is rich in fats and proteins, making it naturally moisturizing – while the white removes oils with bacteria-eating enzymes.

To Use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair and the egg whites only to treat oily hair. Use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with **cool** water and shampoo hair.

Dull Hair: Dairy

Styling products can leave a nasty film on your hair that dulls shine. Shiny hair is happy hair, so dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help bring it back to life. The Lactic acid will gently strip away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes.

To Use: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would.

Dandruff: Lemon & Olive Oil

Poor diet, stress and cooler climates can all result in you looking like you have a snowglobe for a head. The best fix for this is a lemon juice and olive oil mix. The acidity in lemon juice gets rid of any loose, dry flakes of skin, and the olive oil will moisturize.

To Use: Mix 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 2 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp water, and massage into damp scalp to stimulate. Wrap in a warm, damp towel and let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair.

Limp/Fine Hair: Beer

Beer has long been used as a home remedy to add body to hair. I know it smells nasty, but the fermented drink contains generous supplies of yeast, which works to plump up tired tresses. It may turn on your boyfriend too, who knows.

To Use: Mix 1/2 cup flat beer (pour beer into a container and let it sit out for a couple of hours to deplete carbonation) with 1 tsp light oil (sunflower or canola) and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Or add flat beer only to a spray bottle and spritz onto dry hair. When the liquid evaporates, the remaining protein residue will continue to strengthen and structure hair.

Dry/Sundamaged Hair: Honey

You may be reluctant to put this thick, sticky messy stuff in your hair…but fret not – honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and locks in moisture.

To Use: Add 1 to 2 Tbsp of olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application and massage approximately 1/2 cup of it into clean, damp hair and let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. For extremely sun-damaged hair, trying mixing honey with 1 to 2 Tbsp of a protein-rich ingredient, like avocado or egg yolk, which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack.

Dirty/Greasy Hair: Cornmeal

Used properly, cornmeal or cornstarch is an inexpensive way to remove oil and grease…so save your money buying those fancy dry shampoos, because this works just as well.

To Use: Pour 1 Tbsp cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt or pepper shaker (get it cheap at Target), and sprinkle onto your roots. After a few minutes, use a hairbrush to brush it out.

Frizzy Hair: Avacado

Home beauty experts swear by avocado. Its oils and proteins contain the best combination of nutrients for smoothing and weighing down unruly hair.

To Use: Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with water. Give it even more moisturizing power by combining mashed avocado with 1 to 2 Tbsp of a hydrating ingredient like sour cream, egg yolks or mayo…yum.

Residue Buildup: Baking Soda

All of those products that you use eventually weigh down your beautiful hair…but nothing eats through product buildup like baking soda.

To Use: Mix 1 to 2 Tbsp baking soda with small amounts of water until a thick paste forms. Massage into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with water, then shampoo hair.

Remember these tricks! Now you can keep your hair full as well as your wallet…it will be worth the messy kitchen, I promise.
